Sheridan Johnson
Sheridan Johnson, father, grandfather, educator, musician and friend, passed away peacefully at his home, Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Sheridan was born October 23, 1934, in Richland Center, to Bernard and Bernice (Huffman) Johnson.
Known throughout Whitehall simply as “SJ,” Sheridan was a familiar and cherished presence in the community. His warm personality, quick smile and genuine interest in others earned him the friendship and respect of countless people throughout his life.
Sheridan attended Luther College in Decorah, IA, and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, where he played in the Army band. His love of music continued long after his military service and became the foundation of a remarkable career in education. As Band Director at Whitehall High School, Sheridan influenced generations of students through music, discipline, encouragement and leadership. His impact extended far beyond the classroom. Former students, fellow educators and community members remember him as a gifted teacher, mentor and role model.
One of the defining moments of Sheridan’s life came in 1970 when his beloved wife, JoAnn, passed away unexpectedly. Their daughter, Mary Jo, was only four years old. Through profound loss, Sheridan demonstrated extraordinary strength, devotion and perseverance as a father. His love for Mary remained one of the great constants of his life, and he took immense pride in the family that grew from that bond.
Outside of music and education, Sheridan was an avid golfer and a familiar fixture at the Whitehall Golf Course where he lived and spent countless hours enjoying the game and the friendships it fostered.
Sheridan also had a special affection for animals. He was known for his compassion toward all creatures and his cats brought him years of companionship, comfort and joy.
Above all, he treasured family and friendship. Those who knew him will remember his kindness, generosity, sense of humor and ability to make people feel valued.
Sheridan is survived by his daughter, Mary Jo Johnson Kamish; son-in-law, Michael Kamish; granddaughters: Grace Kamish and Rosebelle Kamish; and many relatives, former students, colleagues, neighbors and friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn (Anderson) Johnson; his parents, Bernard Johnson and Bernice (Huffman) Johnson; and his sister, Sharon (Johnson) Gillingham.
An open house will be held Sunday, August 30, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Whitehall Golf Course. Family and friends will gather to share stories and celebrate Sheridan’s life.
