Thomas “Tom” H. Schultz

Thomas “Tom” Henry Schultz, born October 27, 1962, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Wabasha, MN, passed tragically from a large tree branch unexpectedly falling on him. He was in his favorite place, the woods, and doing his most favorite activities, helping woodland animals and habitat while also helping another person who wanted this for their woods.
Tom grew up in Alma, where he graduated from Alma High School in 1980. He earned an Associate Degree in Marketing from Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire. For 37 years, Tom worked for Buffalo County Land Conservation, dedicating his career to protecting the land, farmers, and local communities. He designed and coordinated over 900 erosion control structures and 1,600 conservation projects, including the Rose Valley and Waumandee Creek Watershed Projects. In 2002, Tom received Wisconsin’s Outstanding Land Conservation Technician award and a plaque recognizing 17 years of distinguished service. He was also deeply involved in conservation education, working with Alma area schools to connect students with sustainable farming practices.
Tom’s passion for the outdoors extended beyond work. He was an avid deer hunter and dedicated to creating habitats for wildlife, particularly deer, bluebirds, and ducks. He had a talent for building stone walls, crafting fire pits, and making anything with a chainsaw. A natural storyteller and jokester, Tom brought people together through poker games, dice shaking, and sports betting. His generosity knew no bounds—he filled friends’ woodsheds, cleaned roadways to prevent accidents, and maintained recycling bins when needed for friends and local establishments when we saw the need.
Tom served over a decade with the Alma Fire Department and 34 years as an ambulance driver for Western Buffalo County Ambulance Service. He was a founding member of the Buffalo County Quality Deer Management Association and an active member of the Alma Rod and Gun Club.
Tom is survived by his wife, Aimee (Ebersold) Schultz; sons: Trevor and Hunter; their mother, Victoria (Wenger) Schultz; brothers: Daniel and Bruce; aunts: Gloria Schultz, Teresa Rebarchek and Eva Rebarchek; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Christian Schultz; sister, Suzanne; and numerous extended family members.
Tom lived life fully, embracing every moment with action and purpose. His memory will forever inspire those who knew him.
