Willfred “Freddie” Kindschy

Willfred “Freddie” Kindschy, 91, died May 23, 2024, at Chippewa Veterans Home in Chippewa Falls.

Freddie was born in Winona, MN, July 31, 1932, to Ralph and Gertrude (Becker) Kindschy. He was baptized and confirmed in Montana Methodist Church and spent his first 16 years growing up in the Township of Montana (Waumandee area) where he attended Cochrane High School for two years. His parents bought a farm near Blair and he graduated from Blair High School in 1950.

In 1952, he joined the U.S. Army and took basic training at Camp Chaffee, AR. He was sent to Korea in 1953 and spent one year near the DMZ as a Radio Operator. Freddie was honorably discharged as a Corporal and was a member of Hutchins-Stendahl American Legion Post 191 for over 65 years.

In 1955, Freddie met and married Janet Pratt at Black River Falls. Janet passed in 2017, and losing his lifelong partner made for lonely days.

Freddie and Janet farmed for 42 years and established a premier dairy herd of registered Holstein cattle on the farm south of Osseo in the Town of Hale. He was especially proud of the number of Excellent Class cows he bred and developed, including the first homegrown registered Holstein dairy cow to be classified as Excellent in Trempealeau County by the Holstein Association. Freddie was a member of the County, State and National Holstein Association, serving as an officer of the Trempealeau County Holstein Breeders, and other dairy committees. He took pride in his farm and his family and actively participated in community organizations. In 1972, he was awarded the FHA Trempealeau County Farm Family of the year. Freddie served four years as Supervisor for the town of Hale, 16 years on the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Council and was member of Sunday School Building Committee. He was a 4-H General Leader and a member of the Pleasantville Lions Club.

Freddie was especially proud of his family! We all learned the value of hard work, integrity, charity and the importance of faith. He supported and encouraged his children as they excelled in their athletic activities, education, and life choices. Sports were his hobby. He enjoyed the Brewers, Packers and Badgers and especially his son’s athletic events which he rarely missed.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Nelson; sons: Terry (Cerise) Kindschy, Fred (Lori) Kindschy, Dennis (Kathy) Kindschy; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grand children; brother, Carroll (Carol) Kindschy of Wausau; and sister-in-law, Tammy Kindschy of Whitehall.

He was preceeded in death by his wife of 62 years, Janet; son-in-law, Michael Nelson; parents, Ralph & Gertrude Kindschy; brothers & sisters-in-law: LaVerd (Bernice), Gerold, David (Essie), Eugene; and many nieces and nephews.
