After win over Tomah, Arcadia season ends in West Salem

The Arcadia baseball team had one of its best offensive performances in the final regular season game, then didn’t register a hit in a playoff loss.

The Raiders had 11 hits in a 6-4 win over Tomah to close out the regular season last week Monday. Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play began on Thursday when the (5) Raiders played at (4) West Salem, but Arcadia didn’t manage a hit in the 8-0 loss.

Arcadia finished the 2022 season with a 7-13 record, though most of the key starters will return.

The Raiders scored three runs late to get the win.

The teams went back and forth as the Timberwolves scored first, the Raiders took the lead in the third, but two more runs in the bottom of the fifth put Tomah ahead 4-3.

A Gage McGuire single with two outs in the sixth scored Vince Braun to tie the game. 

After Arcadia blanked Tomah in the sixth, they took the lead on a single by Connor Weltzien that scored McCoy Yarrington. Carson Martin followed with a double that put the Raiders ahead by the final score.

Tomah jumped ahead with two runs in the first as their first batter tripled. The Raiders tied the game in the third when Weltzien doubled in Yarrington and Cam Boland. Braun singled Weltzien home to put Arcadia ahead 3-2.

The Timberwolves tied the game with a double in the fifth then took the lead on a groundout. Arcadia responded and then held on for the win.

Arcadia had one of its best offensive performances of the season with 11 hits, led by Braun who was three-for-three before being intentionally walked in his final at-bat. Weltzien and Yarringon both had two hits as Weltzien also had three RBIs.

It was a combined effort on the mound for the Raiders. Weltzien got the win, pitching two innings in relief with four strikeouts, two walks and one hit. Prestin Scow started the game, allowing three hits while striking out one. Yarrington pitched the next two innings with three walks and one strikeout before Weltzien and Martin finished the game, allowing one hit while striking out one in the seventh.

It proved to be a tough game all around for the Raiders as West Salem raked 14 hits, while Arcadia didn’t manage any and committed four errors.

The Panthers took the lead with two runs in the second inning then scored three in the third. They added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Arcadia managed just three base runners all game as Weltzien walked twice and McGuire walked once. The team struck out eight times. 

Weltzien took the loss, striking out four and walking three. Yarrington finished the game, striking out both batters he faced in the sixth.
