Arcadia’s Wegman has historic night from deep in win over Neillsville

There are good shooting nights, there are great shooting nights and then there are record-setting shooting nights. Arcadia sophomore Carter Wegman enjoyed the latter in the Raiders’ blowout win over Neillsville.

Wegman set a new single-game program record by burying nine three-pointers as the Raiders (9-8, 4-4 Coulee) breezed past the Warriors (5-10) 74-38 in their non-conference tilt last Tuesday at the Wanek Center.

Wegman’s nine triples broke the school record of eight previously held by Nolan Martin and Justin Thomas.

“He didn’t start the year with a lot of confidence in his shot, was not shooting the ball incredibly well,” said Arcadia head coach Ryan Sonnentag. “It’s a testament to him. He’s been coming in extra in the mornings, putting in extra work shooting and it’s paying off. His confidence is through the roof.”

It was a solid enough start to the game for Wegman as he made a trio of threes in the first half against Neillsville. But it was after the halftime break where Wegman really caught fire with six more triples hit from deep. In total, Wegman personally went 9 of 16 from deep on a night where Arcadia as a team was 16 of 38 from three-point range.

Those 16 made three-pointers also set a single-game team record.

“I started out the game kind of rough, but I had confidence in all the work I’ve put in. I’ve been coming here every morning,” Wegman said. “I kept letting it fly, and they were going in, so I just kept shooting.”

There was never much doubt in the result of last Tuesday’s game thanks to a scorching start for Arcadia. The Raiders scored the first nine points as part of a 21-2 run to open things up, and their lead was never threatened from there.

Wegman led all scorers with 27 points (all from deep) and Kaiden Rotering added 10 points in the victory. Other Arcadia statistical leaders included Deklyn Grzadzielewski and Trevor Pronschinske with nine points each, Ted Teske with eight points, Nolan Smith with nine rebounds and Max Blaschko with five assists.

Neillsville’s Andrew Hoeser guided his team with 16 points in the loss.

“Passing the ball, keeping our pace, getting what we wanted and finding the opening people,” Rotering said when asked what the keys were to the team’s success in the lopsided win. “We found out who was on in the beginning of the game and just stuck with it, just rode with it the whole game.”
