Arcadia, G-E-T grid teams to compete in ‘alternate’ season

While the rivalry will be renewed, the football season will be very different for both Arcadia and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau this year.

For the first time since the Gale-Ettrick and Trempealeau schools consolidated roughly 50 years ago, Arcadia and G-E-T did not play in the 2019 season due to a one-year conference realignment plan. The rivalry was to be renewed this fall, but both schools opted instead to play in the alternate fall season, which will be played this spring.

At the time, it was announced as a Coulee Conference decision to hold off on the football season, however, longtime Coulee schools Viroqua and Westby both played last fall as did conference newcomers La Crosse Aquinas and Altoona. Viroqua went 1-6, Altoona and Westby were both 0-5 and Aquinas finished 5-3.

The lack of available teams means Arcadia and G-E-T will play each other twice this spring, Arcadia will also play Black River Falls twice in the five-game season.

G-E-T’s season begins March 26 with a home game against Sparta before hosting Kingdom Prep Lutheran on April 2. That will be followed by home games against Arcadia and BRF before the season concludes at Arcadia on April 23.

Arcadia’s season begins with a home game against Menominee Indian on March 27. Then they’ll host BRF before heading to G-E-T. After a bye week, they’ll host G-E-T and end at BRF on April 29.

Arcadia is coming off of a 6-5 season in which they advanced to Level Two of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs, 28-14 to Prairie du Chien, after playing in the Southwest Conference.

G-E-T went 10-2 last year, losing 10-0 in Level Three of the playoffs to Prairie du Chien after playing in the South Central Conference.

The 2021 spring sports season is slated to begin April 19 and run until June 28.
