Arcadia girls pass first Coulee tests

Two-for-two, 2-0, the perfect start.

All could be used to describe the Arcadia High School girls basketball team’s first crack at the Coulee Conference last week.

Arcadia opened its Coulee slate with a home win over Black River Falls last Tuesday before hitting the 50-point threshold for the first time this season in a win at Westby on Friday.

The Raiders improved to 2-1 with the wins but have little time to celebrate as two more Coulee teams lie in wait this week. Luther visited on Tuesday and West Salem treks to the Wanek Center in Arcadia on Thursday.

Freshman Tatum Drazkowski shot 7-for-12 from the floor in last Tuesday’s conference debut for Arcadia, leading all players with a game-high 16 points.

Sophomore Justine Sonsalla added 10 points for Arcadia, which limited the Tigers’ attack for much of the contest.

Cherelle Gunderson led Black River Falls (1-3, 1-1 Coulee) with seven points.

Arcadia coach Evan Pagel said his team would need to rely on more of a spread attack this winter than it did the past few seasons, and the Raiders are finding early success in sharing the offense.

Three different players scored at least 10 points for Arcadia in Friday’s conference win, this time over the Norse (1-3, 0-2 Coulee).

Sonsalla was again productive for the visiting Raiders with her team-best 14 points. Arcadia got 11 points from Madison Grotjahn, and Drazkowski helped with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
