Having made it halfway through the Coulee Conference boys golf season, the race for the conference championship is beginning to crystallize with Black River Falls staking their claim as the frontrunners in the team standings and Arcadia sophomore Landon Jaszewski doing the same on an individual level.
Jaszewski finished tied for third at Fox Hollow Golf Course last Tuesday and then solo second at Ettrick Golf Club two days later, putting him at 67 total points — seven ahead of BRF junior Sam Aebly (60) in second.
Team-wise, the Tigers won both mini meets contested last week, meaning they have now won three of the four held so far. The 18-point gap between BRF (52 points) in first and West Salem (34) in second is wider than the gap between West Salem and the sixth-place tie between Arcadia and Westby/Viroqua at 24 points.
G-E-T finds themselves in fourth in the team standings after tying for fifth at Fox Hollow and taking second at their home mini meet in Ettrick.
Following the completion of the fifth Coulee mini meet on Monday at Viroqua Hills Golf Course, the sixth mini meet will take place next Tuesday at Castle Rock Golf Course near New Lisbon.
Fox Hollow
Black River Falls began their surge up the overall team standings with a resounding victory at Fox Hollow in La Crosse early last week, posting a team score of 162 that was 13 strokes clear of Westby/Viroqua (175) in second.
The remainder of the team standings from that day saw West Salem (179) in third, Onalaska Luther (182) in fourth, G-E-T and Hillsboro in a tie for fifth at 183 and Arcadia (187) in seventh.
The BRF duo of Aebly and senior Calvin Lakowske set the pace by each carding a 39, followed by a three-way tie for third between Jaszewski and Westby/Viroqua seniors Gavyn Hansen and Zach Dahlen at 40.
Senior Aiden Johnson let the way for the Red Hawks by firing a 43 that put him in a five-way tie for ninth. G-E-T also had junior Braydan Van Vreede with a 44, senior Kylan Olson with a 47 and both junior McGuire Slaby and freshman Isaac Woyczik with a 49.
Other scores for the Raiders included sophomore Owen Anderson with a 48, junior Tharren Schock with a 49 and junior Brogan Solberg with a 50.
Ettrick mini meet
BRF won their second consecutive mini meet with a cumulative score of 163, leaving them ahead of G-E-T (172) in second and Arcadia (178) in third on a competitive afternoon at Ettrick Golf Club.
Luther (180) finished in fourth, followed by Westby/Viroqua (182) in fifth, West Salem (183) in sixth and Hillsboro/Royall (186) in seventh.
Aebly fired a 36 to sit all alone atop the individual standings, several strokes ahead of Jaszewski and his 39 in second and Van Vreede in third after his 40. BRF seniors Chris Antonelli and Lakowske each carded a 41 to tie for fourth and round out the top five.
Backing up Jaszewski for Arcadia were Solberg at 43, Anderson at 47 and Schock at 49. Other G-E-T scores featured Slaby with a 43, sophomore Jacob Filla with a 44 and both Johnson and Olson with 45s.
Full team standings through four mini meets saw BRF in first at 52 points, followed by West Salem (34) in second, Luther (33) in third, G-E-T (31) in fourth, Hillsboro/Royall (26) in fifth, and Arcadia and Westby/Viroqua in a tie for sixth at 24 points.
