Arcadia swept by Sparta in doubleheader
The Arcadia Post 17 legion softball team wound up on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep in their latest night of play, falling to Sparta at home last Thursday.
Arcadia (1-3) ends the month on the road at La Crescent on Thursday for a doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m. They have a bye week leading up to the Fourth of July weekend, then are back in action with another road doubleheader at West Salem on Thursday, July 10 starting at 5:30 p.m.
Sparta 6 Arcadia 5
Post 17 let a chance at a win in the opener of a doubleheader against Sparta Post 100 slip away in the late innings last week at home.
Arcadia scored the game’s first three runs but allowed Sparta to respond with three of its own in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Sparta put together another three-run rally in the top of the sixth to take their first lead. Though Post 17 scored twice in the bottom half of the same inning, their hope of rallying for the tying and maybe even the winning run fell short.
At the plate for Arcadia, Kaitlyn Bremer and Ava Lee each went 2 for 3 while Tatum Drazkowski and Maddie Grotjahn each doubled.
Sparta 8 Arcadia 5
A pair of four-run rallies provided Sparta with all the offense it needed to complete the doubleheader sweep of Post 17 last Thursday.
Trailing 8-1 going into its last at-bat in the bottom of the fifth, Arcadia cobbled together four runs to slice into the deficit before the comeback bid petered out. In the loss, Megan Breska went 2-2, Riley Walters finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Pressley Wegman was 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs as well.
