Area girls come up short at wrestling sectional

Arcadia sophomore Kalyce Sobotta fell one win shy of earning her spot at state for this upcoming weekend.

Sobotta placed third in the 132-pound bracket at a sectional hosted by Eau Claire North last Friday. In girls wrestling sectionals, only the top two in each weight class advance to state.

Sobotta pinned Stratford’s Wynn Schoenherr and defeated Holmen’s Jozie Collins via a 21-11 major decision in her first two matches but then lost to Adams-Friendship’s Lydia Hutter in the first-place match and Sparta’s Veda Lepley in the second-place match.

Whitehall’s Ivonne Ortiz Rojas (100), Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro’s Payten Craig (114), Arcadia’s Linnet Barrios (145) and Blair-Taylor’s MaryJane Flynn (152) were all one and done in their sectional appearances in Eau Claire.
