B-T girls cruise past G-E-T, Prairie Farm

The Blair-Taylor girls basketball team found another gear last week, picking up two convincing wins.

The Wildcats took a big lead early against a Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau team that was coming off of a big win last week Tuesday. On Friday, a matchup of two teams ranked in the top 10 in Division Five was all B-T as the Wildcats beat Prairie Farm 91-61.

The wins put B-T at 10-1 on the season before they played at Gilmanton on Tuesday. That will be followed by a home game against Alma Center Lincoln on Friday before B-T heads to Brookwood on Saturday. The Wildcats host New Lisbon this coming Monday with home games against Alma/Pepin on Tuesday and Eleva-Strum on Friday.

While G-E-T had one player score more than 20 points, B-T had two.

The depth was on full display early as the Wildcats jumped out to a 27-8 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and led 41-22 at halftime.

Lindsey Lettner tried to keep her team in the game, she scored 16 in the first half, but B-T’s depth was too much. Lindsay Steien led the way with 20 first half points as she knocked down a pair of three pointers. Abby Thompson added 11.

The Wildcats were able to maintain control in the second half as Thompson hit a three pointer early and they were able to get the ball inside to Kerstyn Kindschy for six points.

Steien finished with a game-high 28 points for B-T, while Thompson scored 20 and Kindschy finished with 13 and 10 rebounds.  Steien also had 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals, while Thompson added nine rebounds and five assists. The Wildcats shot 42 percent from the field and 13-for-16 from the free-throw line.

Lettner put up 26 points for the Red Hawks, but nobody else had more than Genna O’Neill’s six.

B-T coach Jesse Lien said his team got off to a quick start offensively and their defense made life difficult for the Panthers.

Abby Thompson made a three pointer early as the Wildcats added baskets by Steven and Kindschy. Lien said his team’s defensive pressure had the Panthers “working extremely hard to get a good shot.”

B-T, ranked sixth in Division Five, was able to take a 41-22 lead into halftime against the eighth-ranked Panthers.

“The Wildcat ladies had a lot of energy on Friday night,” Lien said. “Talking on defense and getting rebounds led to many fast break opportunities.”

B-T broke the game open early in the second half as they led 60-42 midway through the half before pulling away for a 30-point win.

Steien made five three pointers as she put up 34 points in the win for B-T. Thompson added 23 while the rest of the scoring was even. Both Steien and Thompson had eight assists in the game.

B-T held Prairie Farm to 37 percent shooting, including just two-for-14 on three-point attempts. The Wildcats made 11 three pointers and shot about 51 percent from the field.
