Big innings help Indees pull away from Norse softball

The Independence/Gilmanton softball team came out swinging with five runs in the first inning then they put the game away with eight in the fourth.

The Indees took a 7-0 lead before Whitehall climbed back to get within four. That’s when the Indees put up eight to put the game away.

The win put I/G at 2-4 on the season before games against Eleva-Strum and Alma Center Lincoln this Monday and Tuesday. On Thursday, they’ll host Melrose-Mindoro before welcoming Pepin/Alma on Friday. This coming Tuesday, they’re scheduled to play at Augusta.

Whitehall fell to 1-4 on the season before playing a doubleheader in Blair-Taylor on Tuesday of this week. They’re slated for two against Alma Center Lincoln on Thursday before heading to Cochrane-Fountain City on Friday.

The Indees plated five runs on three hits to take control in the first inning.

An RBI single by Rhianna Theisen got the scoring started before two more runs scored on ground outs. Makiyah Scow added an RBI single and later came around to score herself, making the score 5-0.

Theisen added another RBI hit in the second and scored on a wild pitch, making the score 7-0.

Whitehall got on the board in the bottom of the second when Ashlyn Clatt plated two runs with a single. They added another run on a ground out in the third to pull within four.

A big inning by I/G all but clinched the win.

The Indees loaded the bases with no outs before two runs scored on an error. Kylynn Kennedy added an RBI single before another run scored on a steal. Theisen ended the scoring with a double that brought home two runs, making the score 15-3. 

Whitehall scored one run in the fourth and another in the fifth, but the game ended by rule after five innings.

Theisen went three-for-three at the plate with four RBIs while Scow added one hit and three RBIs. 

Leah Sylla was the winning pitcher, striking out two while walking 10 and allowing three hits in 4.1 innings. Avery Halama got the final two outs. 

Harlow Foss led Whitehall with two hits. Clatt got the start and pithced the first two innings for Whitehall before being replaced by Kelsie Klomsten.
