Booster Club donation eliminates prep sports fees for Independence families

A donation from the Independence Booster Club will eliminate participation costs for student athletes at Independence High School.

The Independence School Board accepted a $3,500 donation from the booster club at its meeting last Tuesday. As a result of the donation, students will not be charged for sports when they register for the 2024-25 school year.

Families with high school athletes previously paid the district $50 to participate in a sport with maximum annual costs of $100 per student and $150 per family. Students who qualify for free and reduced lunch are not charged.

District families combined to pay an average of $3,100 in such fees over the past few years, district administrator Paul Franzwa said, adding the donation was a welcomed surprise.

“It’s money that they (booster club) raised with all the events and all the things that they do to support high school athletics here, and then they’re just giving it back to the families. So that’s great,” Franzwa said.

Franzwa told the school board he believes the booster club hopes to have the donation as an annual offering.

The donation was approved unanimously.

“I can only imagine there was a discussion with funds and what to do with extra funds,” board member Jen Rombalski said, “and what a great way to put that forward for kids and families.”
