Four from area to play in all-star games
Three area schools will be represented as four athletes compete in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star games in Wisconsin Dells next week.
Blair-Taylor will be well represented with two players and coach Randy Storlie for the Division Five Red team.
Two four-year starters in Kyle Steien and Matthew Waldera will be suiting up for the team. The duo helped lead B-T to a 23-2 record in 2020-21 as they lost in the sectional final to Onalaska Luther. The Wildcats advanced to at least the sectional round the last three years, losing to Bangor in the semifinal in 2019 before beating Bangor in that same round in 2020 — only to have the rest of the postseason cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Steien and Waldera have been B-T’s leading scorers each of the last three years.
Storlie will coach along with Kory Rud of Gilmanton and Justin Beck of Port Edwards.
That game will be played next Thursday at 9 a.m., followed by Division Four at 11 a.m., Division Three at 1 p.m., Division two at 3 p.m. and Division One at 5 p.m.
Next Wednesday, two area girls will compete as Chloe Halverson of Arcadia will play in the Division Three game and Ziy Conner of Independence will compete in Division Five.
Halverson, a four-year player for the Raiders, was a starter for the team’s 2019-20 State Tournament run. She returned for her senior year as the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted her team’s flow as they went 8-9. The Raiders advanced to the sectional round in two of her final three years.
As the point guard, Halverson helped dish to two career 1,000-point scorers in Ellie Hoesley and Linzy Sendelbach. Her defense was also considered a key part of Arcadia’s run. She was the team’s second-leading scorer at 12.2 points per game in 2020-21.
Fresh off of a state championship in track, Conner is no stranger to big games. She helped lead the Indees to the sectional round twice, including a 63-49 loss to eventual state champion Assumption this past season.
Conner led the state in rebounding each of the past two seasons, earning first-team all-state honors this past season with averages of 25.7 points and 16.3 rebounds.
Conner will play for the Division Five South team at 9 a.m. next Wednesday. After the Division Four game at 11 a.m., Halverson will play for the Division Three North team at 1 p.m. The Division Two and Division One games will follow at 3 and 5 p.m.
All games will be played at JustAGame Field House, located on La Crosse St. in Wisconsin Dells.
