G-E-T baseball suffers three losses

A rivalry game on Monday and two other conference contests filled a slate of three games for the G-E-T baseball program last week.

The Red Hawks (1-9 overall, 1-5 Coulee Conference) fell in a back-and-forth contest against Arcadia on Monday (see story elsewhere in sports) before suffering a loss to Black River Falls the following day. A 10-4 loss to Luther on Thursday closed the week.

A rematch against Luther was scheduled for this Monday before G-E-T hosts Mississippi Valley Conference leader Onalaska (9-2, 6-0 MVC) on Thursday and pays another conference opponent in West Salem (4-7, 3-3) a visit on Friday.

The Red Hawks tied last Tuesday’s game early but conceded multiple unanswered runs in a conference loss.

Black River Falls (5-2, 3-2 Coulee) claimed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Red Hawks used patience at the plate to tie the game in the second inning—Nick Crum scored on a walk with the bases loaded to get G-E-T on the board, and Noah Oines tied the game after a fielding error by the Tigers on a Myles Marley ground ball.

The Tigers answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and scored seven more to end the game in five innings.

Calvin Davis was G-E-T’s best batter, hitting 2-for-3 with a walk and a score. Oliver Marley joined Myles as pitchers for G-E-T, splitting eight walks, nine earned runs against, seven walks and six strikeouts.

Dan Gerdes led the hosts with three hits, and teammates Archer Grant and Noah Kubaskie limited G-E-T to four hits.

Luther 10 G-E-T 4

A 1-0 G-E-T lead after one inning was offset by a 5-run burst from the host Knights (7-5, 3-2) in the bottom of the second inning in last Thursday’s contest at Luther High School.

The Red Hawks cut their disadvantage to 5-3 in the third inning, but Luther held on to win with late offense.

Each team finished with nine hits. Davis collected three for G-E-T, and Jackson Kendall hit 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Knights.

Ben Filla and Nathan Holthaus pitched for G-E-T and allowed only two earned runs—Filla got the start and struck out three batters while walking one, giving up six hits through four innings

Holthaus closed the game, allowing three hits against with two strikeouts and a walk.
