G-E-T boys drop three in a row

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau boys basketball team are hoping to get back on a winning track heading into the holidays following a week that saw them suffer their first three losses of the season.

The Red Hawks (2-3, 0-1 Coulee) fell victim to the Luther Knights in their conference opener, which was bookended by non-conference defeats at the hands of La Crosse Logan and Holmen.

Tuesday’s home conference opener against Viroqua gives G-E-T a chance to bounce back, followed by a non-conference tilt at Sparta on Friday.

Despite a strong push after the halftime break that allowed the Red Hawks to lead for much of the second half, it was the Rangers (2-2) who had the final response last Tuesday in La Crosse.

A shaky opening half resulted in G-E-T trailing 26-19 at the break. The Red Hawks responded well and seized a lead that they would hold for most of the second half.

However, Logan finished the game on a 13-0 run to rip away the win, with senior Bradley Check’s and-1 with 37.8 seconds left putting the Rangers ahead for good.

Junior Mason Brone finished with 19 points and nine assists for G-E-T, senior Jackson Burns tallied 10 points and six rebounds and senior Kyle Seiling chipped in eight points. Logan senior Jacob Hackbarth led his team with a game-high 21 points.

Luther 62 G-E-T 55

For a second straight game, the Red Hawks faltered in the closing minutes. This time, it cost them a chance at a win in their conference opener.

G-E-T narrowly trailed 27-24 at halftime and remained in a competitive battle with the Knights (4-0, 2-0 Coulee) throughout the second half last Thursday in Onalaska. But after being tied 45-45 with four minutes to go in regulation, Luther ripped off a 13-3 run to race ahead and pull off the victory.

Leading scorers for the Red Hawks included Brone with 19 points, senior Brecken Ebersold with 13 and Burns with eight. Luther had four double-digit scorers in the win: senior Will Huelskamp with 20 points, senior Jackson Kendall with 15, senior Synclair Byus with 14 and Brody Greeno with 14.

Holmen 80 G-E-T 68

A return to the friendly confines of Russ Lund Gymnasium wasn’t enough to stop the Red Hawks from dropping their third straight game, as they fell to the Vikings (4-1) on Saturday in Galesville.

The Red Hawks led for a good portion of the first half of Saturday’s non-conference tilt, but Holmen rode a 14-4 run to a 35-30 lead at the halftime intermission. The Vikings never trailed in the second and led by as much as 15 en route to the road win.

Brone tallied a game-high 26 points and Burns added 17 of his own in the defeat. Leading Holmen scorers included senior Kaiden Wilber with 20 points, senior Keenan Eisermann with 15, sophomore Jayden Bartels with 14, senior Parker Lindberg with 11 and junior Alex Berget with 10.
