A state champion at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau has been honored at the national level.

Now a sophomore at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Davis Wenthe ran on the Badgers distance medley team that took third at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Indoor Championships on March 12.

Racing in Birmingham, Ala., Wenthe was the second leg of the relay team. Adam Spencer had the team in first place, running the 1200 leg in 2:53.49. Wenthe kept the team in first place, sprinting his 400 leg in 47.85. The team dropped off from there as Abdullahi Hassan ran the 800 in 1:47.54 and Jackson Sharp finished with a 3:46.91 time in the 1600. In all, the team had a time of 9:25.78.

The Badgers finished tied for 15th in the national meet.

Wenthe was the 2020 Wisconsin Track and Field Gatorade Athlete of the Year, despite not being able to compete his senior year. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association cancelled the 2020 spring sports season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wenthe won the state title in the 300 hurdles in 2019.
