G-E-T softball drops first two
Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau softball got their season started with two losses against Coulee Conference opponents last week.
The Red Hawks played a closely-contested matchup with their rivals from Arcadia in their home opener last Tuesday (see story elsewhere in sports), before being shut down offensively on Friday at Westby.
G-E-T falls to 0-2 on the season with the two Coulee losses. They attempt to bounce back this week with their road date with West Salem on Monday and another Thursday road game at Aquinas.
Westby 12 G-E-T 2
The Red Hawks were held to one hit on Friday, falling in five innings despite being first on the board.
Lindsey Lettner gave G-E-T their first run in the top of the first, reaching on a base hit before stealing second and advancing home on two wild pitches. Westby answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning, with that score holding until the fourth inning. Sevannah Hynes reached on an error in the top of the fourth with one out, and later came around to score two batters later on another error at shortstop.
That run would prove to be the last offense in an otherwise scuffling day at the plate for G-E-T, who struck out 10 times. Westby pulled away with a seven-run bottom of the fourth, tagging Red Hawk starter Abby Braunreiter for 10 earned runs on 10 hits and three walks on the day.
