G-E-T softball team earns first win

Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau got their first win of the season last Thursday, taking a shootout over Aquinas for a nonconference victory.

The win improves the Red Hawks to 1-2 on the season. Their scheduled contest last Monday against West Salem was moved to later this month.

Entering this week, G-E-T was scheduled for home games Monday against La Crosse Logan, Tuesday against Viroqua, and Thursday against Sparta before a Friday road trip to Black River Falls.

G-E-T 13 Aquinas 9

A seven-run fourth inning helped the Red Hawks pull away from Aquinas, as G-E-T took a win on the road on Thursday.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the fourth, G-E-T’s Anna Puent walked with the bases loaded to tie the game. Lettner drove in a run on a base hit to give G-E-T the lead, before Genna O’Neill drove in two more with a base hit to give her team the 6-3 advantage. A fielder’s choice nabbed Lettner at home for the second out, but the scoring was not done yet. Ryann Duffenbach drew her second walk of the inning to drive in a run, before two more runners scored on an error in right field off the bat of McKenna Johnson.

Aquinas answered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning, drawing back within a 9-7 deficit. G-E-T kept the scoring momentum going however in the ensuing half inning, as O’Neill drove in one of two Red Hawk runs in the top of the fifth to push the lead back to 11-7.

Aquinas pulled back within two by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but G-E-T had one more rally in them in the top of the seventh. Facing two down with Lettner aboard after reaching on an error, O’Neill drove in her fifth run of the game with an RBI double. Caydence Kokott followed with an RBI single of her own that pushed the 13th run across for the Red Hawks.

O’Neill was able to finish what she started on the mound, pitching a scoreless seventh to finish a 10-strikeout performance while allowing four earned runs on 12 hits and four walks. O’Neill’s three hits led to two runs scored and five RBIs. Lettner also reached four times on three base hits and a walk, scoring three runs. Also with two of G-E-T’s 11 total hits was Camery Holzer, who drove in a run with an RBI double in the second inning.
