G-E-T splits Westby games, ekes past Viroqua
The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau baseball team cobbled together another solid week, splitting their two games against Westby and getting a payback win against Viroqua to bolster their record in Coulee play.
The Red Hawks (7-4, 4-2 Coulee) kick off the new month Thursday in Whitehall at 5 p.m., then are scheduled for a couple more road games after the weekend against Arcadia on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Melrose-Mindoro Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Westby 7 G-E-T 0
The G-E-T bats were tamed in a shutout loss to the Norsemen (9-3, 2-2) last Monday in Westby.
A one-out single by Mitchell Thell in the third inning proved to be the team’s only hit on the evening against Westby’s Devin Nedland, who struck out 12 in a complete-game shutout. Nedland faced the minimum number of 21 batters in his seven innings of work, as Thell was caught stealing second after his single.
G-E-T 3 Viroqua 2
After losing 5-2 at home to the Blackhawks (6-2, 3-1) the previous week, the Red Hawks earned a measure of revenge with a tight win in the rematch last Tuesday in Viroqua.
Trailing 1-0 through three innings, G-E-T leapfrogged ahead in the top of the fourth after plating a run on a double play with the bases loaded and Tucker McDonah scoring on a wild pitch.
Another run scored on an error in the fifth gave the Red Hawks just enough breathing room to eventually secure the win.
Caiden Brady and Daxson Scow each singled for G-E-T. Oliver Marley earned the win with three scoreless innings pitched in relief in which he struck out six while allowing only one hit and one walk.
G-E-T 9 Westby 6
A four-run rally in the bottom of the first — featuring Brady getting hit by a pitch and Adain Busch drawing a walk with the bases loaded — set the tone for a victory on Thursday in Galesville.
The Norsemen eventually whittled the G-E-T lead down to 7-6 going into the final inning. The Red Hawks added two final runs in the top of the seventh with Nathan Holthaus scoring on a groundout and Brady coming home on an error.
G-E-T’s Oliver Remus finished 2 for 4 at the plate and Brady had a double. Calvin Davis picked up the win by tossing five innings in which he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks.
