G-E-T track races to fourth at UW-L invite behind relays

Both the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School boys and girls track and field teams ran to fourth place finishes in the large school division of the Cashton Invitational, an indoor meet at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse last Saturday.

G-E-T finished with 56.5 points in the girls’ side of the meet, beaten by only Holmen (122), Reedsburg (70.5) and Viroqua (59.83). The boys scored a 51 and were bested by Holmen (112.5), Reedsburg (84) and Central (56).

The Red Hawks are next scheduled to compete in an invitational at Holmen on April 12.

Adrianna Rotering was crowned the champion of the 1,000-meter race in 3 minutes, 24.19 seconds. Teammates Avali Bratberg, Amelia Doud, Tauna Janssen and Aleah Hunter also took home a top finish, winning the 3,200-meter relay in 11:28.79.

The win was a big one, too–the next closest team was Holmen in 11:36.43.

The Red Hawks had success on the guys’ side of the same event. Onalaska narrowly beat G-E-T in the boys 3,200-meter relay, as G-E-T’s Ethan Burmeister, Carter Gold, Lance Jumbeck and Sam Ruiter teamed up to place second in 9:24.57.

The Red Hawks weren’t done winning, as the girls 1,600-meter relay team of Avali Bratberg, Kaylee Hauge, Kylie Schmitz and Quinn Wenthe beat out their opponents by nearly 20 seconds. G-E-T won the event in 4:26.59, and Holmen was next in 4:43.18. 

On the other side of the meet the Red Hawk boys earned a win in the 1,600-meter relay, as Gold and Jumbeck joined Caleb Lightfoot and Elijah Sorenson to beat Holmen (3:51.39) with a time of 3:50.62.

Charlie Caya won the 600-meter race in 1:39.44, narrowly edging Reedsburg’s Ethan Kroeger by less than a tenth of a second. 

Will Thompson finished with the second best leap (5 feet, 8 inches) in the high jump on the boys’ side. Matthew Levandoski of Holmen was the only jumper to beat Thompson with a jump of 6 feet.

B-T girls, WHS boys crack top 10 at Cashton meet

The Blair-Taylor girls track and field team finished seventh and the Whitehall boys were ninth at the Cashton Invitational, an indoor meet held at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. 

The Wildcat girls took home a seventh place finish, scoring 35.5 points in the meet, while the Norse girls were 12th with 14.5. The Whitehall boys scored 31.4 points to take ninth, while the B-T boys team was 12th with 20.2. Luther won the boys’ side of the meet with a 68, and Kickapoo/La Farge won the girls’ side with an 84.5.

B-T’s Paige Kelly took second in the 55 meter dash in 7.86 seconds, just behind Braylee Hyatt of Cashton at 7.75. Kelly also helped Blair-Tayor’s 800 meter relay team to a third place finish alongside Sara Steffenson, Lou Castrique and Madison Goodbear in 2 minutes, 2.12 seconds.

Hunter Wagner, Ethan Kniseley, Riley McAdams and Dreyton Deglow also placed third in the 800 relay with a time of 1:45.25. New Lisbon won the event in 1:43.22.

DaVonne Turner had a good day for the Wildcats in the long jump, taking second with a leap of 18 feet, 10 inches. 

Kevin Carroll led the Whitehall boys with a second-place finish in the 800. He was also fourth in the 1600.

Whitehall’s 3200 relay team of Jonathan Thorn, Nolan Thompson, Ben Mohan and Colton Pank took third. Their 1600 relay team with three of the same runners and Payton Thompson replacing Nolan Thompson was also fourth. 

The top finish for the Whitehall girls was Avery Sonsalla, who took fourth in the triple jump. She also ran on the fifth-place 800 relay team and Alexis Correa was fifth in the long jump.

B-T is slated to compete again next Thursday in a meet hosted by Augusta. Whitehall is scheduled to compete at Stevens Point on Friday.
