A busy weekend allowed the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School volleyball team to get plenty of experience and competition last week.

The Red Hawks were one of a number of teams that competed in an annual tournament at Aquinas High School in La Crosse last weekend, with the Red Hawks dropping four matches. The efforts followed a split of two Coulee Conference matches, with G-E-T beating Black River Falls after dropping the opener to Westby — both with 3-0 match scores. Full statistics and scores for individual matches were not reported to the Times.

The Red Hawks were scheduled to play at Onalaska Luther on Tuesday.

A tournament opening match on Saturday morning saw the Red Hawks in a steady competition with Prairie du Chien.

Both teams traded serves and points from the opening serve. Despite the Red Hawks holding a few leads late, it was the Blackhawks who came out victorious thanks to a strong push.

After forcing a tie at 23, the Blackhawks took over to win the first set 26-24. The Blackhawks ended the tournament-opening match in a similar fashion but were on the other side of a late comeback in set two.

The Blackhawks built a 16-10 lead before the Red Hawks tied things up at 20. Prairie du Chien took over from there, winning 25-21.

G-E-T went on to lose to McDonell Central 25-17, 25-18; Eleva-Strum, 27-25, 25-15 and Baraboo, 25-27, 25-18 and 15-8.

The Red Hawks were paced last weekend with 23 kills from Elyse Schoonover over the four matches, followed by Jordan Stanislowski with nine and Tatum Johnson with six.

Johnson and Schoonover each had a pair of blocks, too.

Kayla Schultz (13) and Schoonover (eight) joined Kirkey (one) with assists, and the aforementioned Kirkey co-led the Red Hawks with four digs alongside Kaylee Hauge.
