G-E-T volleyball starts season with losses to Westby, BRF

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School volleyball team opened the season with a loss to Westby on Tuesday. 

The Red Hawks lost the Coulee Conference match in three sets to the visiting Norsemen before hosting Black River Falls on Thursday. G-E-T battled back to win the second set after losing the first on Thursday, but they eventually lost the match in four sets.

G-E-T played in a tournament at Aquinas last weekend (see story elsewhere in sports) where they went 1-2, putting their overall record at 1-4 and 0-2 in Coulee Conference play.

The Red Hawks hosted Onalaska Luther on Tuesday and will play in a tournament at Sparta on Saturday. This coming Tuesday they’ll be at West Salem before heading to Viroqua on Thursday.

The Red Hawks lost in three sets, opening the season with a 14-point set. 

They responded in the second set, pushing the score closer before losing 25-19. Westby closed the game with a 25-15 loss in the third set.

Kayla Schultz led the Red Hawks with 11 assists. Lindsey Lerner (six) paced the team in digs, and Elyse Schoonover recorded four kills. Ryann Duffenbach and Kayli Bratberg each had three kills.

After scoring just 10 points in the first set, G-E-T rebounded in a big way, but still came up short. 

The Red Hawks won the second set in a tiebreaker, 27-25. They followed it up with a pair of close sets, but it wasn’t enough as Black River Falls won both to win the match.
