I/G’s Sylla qualifies for state XC meet

Independence/Gilmanton junior Taylor Sylla finished fourth at Saturday’s Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Three Westfield Sectional to qualify for this week’s state meet.

Sylla finished 26.6 seconds behind the meet champion, Addy Duellman of Cochrane-Fountain City, to earn the third of five individual qualifying spots. Both Addy and Paxtyn Duellman will join Sylla at Saturday’s state meet held at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. C-FC finished third in the team standings with 81 points, I/G was fourth with 109. La Crosse Aquinas took the team title, edging Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 59-60.

The Division Three girls race kicks off this year’s state meet at noon.

Anna Kent finished 11th overall for I/G while Allie Sylla finished 29th, Sophia Kampa was 32nd and Rielynn Sheahan took 51st. Kia Back and Hannah Gierok were the team’s sixth and seventh runners, finishing 86th and 87th in the race.

Neither B-T nor Whitehall had enough runners to qualify in the team standings. Kelsey Lien led Whitehall, taking 49th overall and Ali Jorgenson was 64th. Lexi Kurth took 79th for Whitehall and Andreanna Hemenway was 88th.

The top boys runner was B-T’s Thomas Brandt, who took 20th overall. The final individual qualifier in the boys race finished 11th, about 35 seconds ahead of Brandt. The Wildcats were ninth as a team, as Aquinas took the title with 42 points and Necedah claimed the other team qualifying spot by finishing second with 60 points.

Jacob Olson was second on B-T and 23rd overall, Armoni Samples finished 79th, Wyatt Schrock, 88th; Jerick Cornejo, 91st and Billy Miller 96th.

Armealio Hemenway led Whitehall, taking 58th overall, two spots ahead of Ashton Hanson. Evander Peterson finished 71st; Finn Anderson, 89th; Cayden Faldet-Platteter, 94th and Colby Santos, 97th.

Owen Gierok finished 34th for I/G.
