Indee baseball team loses three

The Independence/Gilmanton baseball team struggled in three losses last week.

The Indees got off to a tough start last Tuesday with an 18-2 loss to Blair-Taylor. The team dropped a nonconference game to Bruce, 9-3, on Thursday and then fell to Melrose-Mindoro, 13-0, on Friday.

The losses dropped I/G’s record to 1-8 overall. The team hosted Arcadia on Monday and played at Cochrane-Fountain City on Tuesday. On Friday, the team is set to play at Augusta.

The Raiders took control with four runs in the third, before adding more later to take a 9-0 lead. 

Bruce scored one in the top of the first inning before scoring four on three singles and two hit batters in the third. A triple plated another run as part of a three-run fifth inning and another run scored on a double in the sixth. 

Ricky Lopez singled to put the Indees on the board in the bottom of the sixth. I/G added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but never threatened Bruce’s lead.

The Indees had seven hits in the game with seven different players getting one. 

Ricky Lopez got the start and took the loss as he pitched into the fifth inning, allowing seven hits and five walks while striking out six. Preston Solberg finished the game, striking out five while allowing three hits.

Mel-Min 13 I/G 0

The Indees hung in the game until the Mustangs exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning.

Mel-Min took the lead with one run in the top of the first, then got breathing room with three in the second. The score was 4-0 until the fifth when the Mustangs had eight hits and took advantage of three walks to score nine runs.

The Indees managed just one hit in the game, a single by Ricky Lopez in the first.

Chase Back took the loss on the mound, pitching the first four innings and allowing 10 hits and three walks while striking out two. Solberg came on in the fifth inning, allowing three hits and three walks.
