Indee baseball team wins three of five in DC play

After a marathon loss to begin the week, the Independence/Gilmanton baseball team won three straight then dropped another to end the week.

The Indees fell to Augusta 16-15 in eight innings last week Monday before sweeping a doubleheader against Blair-Taylor on Friday. They added another win, 8-2, over Cochrane-Fountain City on Thursday, but lost to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Friday. No further information from the ECIL game was reported to the Times. 

With a 10-4 record (8-4 in Dairyland Conference play) the Indees won’t play again until Thursday when they host Melrose-Mindoro. They’re in action at home against on Friday against Eleva-Strum. This coming Monday, they’ll head to Whitehall before hosting Alma Center Lincoln next Thursday.

Augusta 16 I/G 15

After scoring 15 runs in the first six innings, the Indees couldn’t push the winning run across.

The Indees scored three runs in the first inning, two more in the second and exploded for 10 in the sixth. The Beavers kept up with them, however, forcing extra innings.

The Indees had a chance to end the game in regulation after a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, but two strikeouts and a groundout put the game in extra innings.

After Augusta pushed the go-ahead run across in the top of the eighth, the Indees had the top of their batting order up in the bottom half, but a strikeout and two groundouts ended the game.

The Indees had seven hits in the game as Ben Pyka, Gael Leon and Hunter Guenther all had two, both of Guenther’s were doubles.

Pitching statistics were not provided to the Times.

Guenther was on fire on the mound in the shutout win.

The I/G pitcher allowed just two hits and no walks as he struck out seven in the complete game win.

The Indees took the lead in the first when Wyatt Kuerschner doubled Guenther home. They added another run in the fifth when Xavier Santillan walked and scored on a double by Gael Leon. 

I/G 8 Blair-Taylor 3

The Indees scored eight runs before the Wildcats got on the board.

Two runs scored on errors in the bottom of the first. Carlos Montalvo added an RBI single in the second. 

Montalvo added another RBI single in the third after Santillan hit one as part of a three-run inning that made the score 7-0. Another run scored on a groundout in the bottom of the fourth.

B-T put up three runs in the top of the fifth, but that’s all they’d get.

Brandon Sylla was the winning pitcher, tossing 3.1 innings while allowing two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. 

Montalvo had two of I/G’s five hits. 

I/G 8 C-FC 2

The Indees scored three in the third and never looked back.

C-FC came out swinging with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Indees would keep them in check for the rest of the game.

I/G took the lead with three runs in the third, added another in the fifth and scored four in the sixth to put the game away.

Individual statistics for I/G were not reported to the Times.
