Indee boys fall to ECI in opener

The Independence/Gilmanton boys basketball team was close early, but Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran went on a big run to take control.

The Indees had the lead about six minutes into the game, but managed just two points the rest of the half as ECI took a 15-point advantage into the intermission.

I/G will be back in action when it heads to Cochrane-Fountain City on Thursday. The team hosts Whitehall this coming Tuesday and will play at Alma Center Lincoln next Friday.

Nolan Schank scored five points early, including a three-point play with a basket and a foul that gave his team a 9-7 lead, but the Indees couldn’t hold on.

The Lancers responded with a 19-2 run to close out the half and took a 26-11 lead into the intermission.

The Indees kept fighting in the second half as a steal and layup by Nery Lopez cut the ECI advantage to eight with about 14 minutes remaining in the game. However, the Lancers responded with an 8-0 run and never looked back.

Schank put up a double-double for the Indees, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Glen Turner Jr. was the team’s next highest scorer, finishing with seven points.
