The Independence girls basketball team failed to top 30 points in two losses last week.

The Indees were competitive with Arcadia until late on Thursday as they fell 36-28 (see story elsewhere in Sports). The next day they were neck-and-neck with Gilmanton, but the Panthers pulled out a 34-30 win.

The losses put the Indees at 5-12 overall and 1-8 in Dairyland Conference play, ahead of only Gilmanton (1-10) in the Small Division.

Independence hosted Alma/Pepin on Tuesday of this week and will play at New Auburn on Thursday. Friday will give them a rematch against Gilmanton, this time at home. They close out the season next week as they host Blair-Taylor on Tuesday and Alma Center Lincoln on Thursday.

The teams were close almost across the board, but the Panthers shot six percentage points better from the field and that proved to be the difference.

Gilmanton was more efficient overall as they shot 32 percent from the field to Independence’s 26 percent and had five fewer turnovers.

Both teams struggled in the first half as Gilmanton took an 11-10 lead into halftime. The game remained close for the second half, but the Panthers pulled out the win at the end.

Independence had one more made free throw, but the teams were close to even across the board.

Lydia Evans led Gilmanton with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Aubrie Pronschinske led the Indees with 10 points and added seven rebounds.

The Indees also struggled with fouls as four starters finished with four fouls.
