Indee girls second at DC Championship

Runners from the Independence/Gilmanton girls cross country team made up half of the first eight finishers as the team took second in the Dairyland Conference Championship meet in Augusta on Thursday.

Cochrane-Fountain City claimed the girls team title, with two of the top three runners and six inside the first 13. C-FC scored 31 points, I/G finished with 39 and nobody else was close. Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran won the boys title with 31 points, Blair-Taylor finished third with 84 and Whitehall was fourth with 88.

All of the conference teams will compete in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Three Westfield Area Sectional on Saturday. From there, the top two teams and five individuals not on those teams will advance to the state meet in Wisconsin Rapids next Saturday.

DC Championship

The Indees were right near the top, but a recent state champion edged them out.

Taylor Sylla finished second in the race for I/G while Anna Kent took fifth; Allie Sylla was seventh and Sopia Kampa, eighth. But C-FC had more depth, in addition to having the race winner, 2022 state champion Addy Duellman, the team had third-place finisher Paxtyn Duellman and four other runners finish inside the top 13. C-FC won the 2022 team championship.

I/G’s fifth runner was Rielynn Sheahan, who took 19th while Kia Back finished 34th and Hannah Gierok was 37th.

Neither B-T nor Whitehall had enough runners to qualify for the team standings. Kelsey Lien finished 16th for B-T ahead of Jadrean Borreson, 21st, and Ali Jorgensen, 28th. Lexi Kurth finished 25th for Whitehall and Andreanna Hemenway was 36th.

Thomas Brandt continued a strong senior season for B-T, taking second in the boys’ race. Jacob Olson wasn’t far behind, finishing fourth while Armoni Samples took 28th, Jerick Cornejo was 43rd and Billy Miller, 45th.

Armealio Hemenway led the Whitehall boys and took 14th overall. Ashton Hanson and Evander Peterson took 22nd and 23rd while Chriss Mann was 25th, Erick Aguilar Peralta; 33rd; Colby Santos; 35th and Finn Anderson ,41st.

Owen Gierok took 10th for I/G.
