Indee girls split with Cashton, A/P

If they could only win one, the Independence girls basketball team won the more important of the two games played last week.

The Indee girls began the week with a 49-38 nonconference loss to Cashton on Tuesday. On Thursday, however, their defense shut down Alma/Pepin as they earned a 36-26 Dairyland Conference win.

The Indees began this week with an even 3-3 record and a 1-1 mark in DC action. They were set to play in Black River Falls on Monday and in Gilmanton on Tuesday before going to Alma Center Lincoln on Friday. Their stretch of road games continues next week when they play in Whitehall on Tuesday.

The Indees couldn’t recover from a slow start.

Cashton scored the first five points of the game before Independence scored the next five. The Eagles then scored seven straight and the Indees never fully recovered.

Free throws by Avery Pape ended Cashton’s second run, but the Eagles scored five of the next seven points to take a 17-9 lead.

Baskets by Amiah Ives and Ahnna Bautch kept the Indees within striking distance at 19-13, but Cashton got a basket by Braylee Hyatt and a three from Sydney Helgerson to take a 24-13 lead. Hyatt scored again to put them ahead by 13 as they took an 11-point lead into halftime.

The Eagles went ahead by 16 early in the second half and maintained a lead throughout. The Indees cut the lead to nine late in the game, but couldn’t get any closer.

The Indees shot better from the field than the Eagles — 33 percent to 31 percent, but Cashton dominated the glass with 12 more rebounds, which helps them earn 16 more field goal attempts.

Pape led the Indees with 14 points while Ives scored eight with nine rebounds. Bautch had six points and eight rebounds.

The Indees limited the Eagles to 17 percent shooting from the field and forced 24 turnovers as they pulled away in the second half for the win.

The teams were tied at 14 at halftime and the Eagles took an early lead on a three pointer. A/P still led 23-22 before the Indees made a run.

Ives put Independence back on top with a basket before two free throws by Callie Zastrow made the score 26-23.

Pape connected on two free throws then made two straight baskets to put the Indees ahead by 10 and extend the run to 11-0.

The Eagles scored the next basket, but that was followed by a long stretch in which neither team was able to score. Bautch put the Indees back ahead by 10 with two free throws. The teams exchanged free throws down the stretch as the Indees won by that margin.

The Indees shot 32 percent from the field, but were nine-for-14 from the free-throw line. They struggled taking care of the ball, turning it over 34 times.

Pape led the team with 15 points, while Ives scored eight, Adison Pronschinske had five and both Bautch and Zastrow scored four.
