The Independence girls basketball team finished strong to win one home nonconference game before faltering in the second half of another last week.

The Indees had a two-point lead at halftime against Greenwood, but gradually increased their advantage early in the second half, winning 49-40 last week Monday. They trailed by three points at halftime of Tuesday’s game against Arcadia, but the Raiders got more shots to fall in the second half as they took control and won, 51-35 (see story elsewhere in Sports). The Indees were scheduled to play a Dairyland Conference game on Thursday, but a snowstorm postponed that contest until Dec. 27.

Independence entered this week with a 3-6 record (1-2 in DC play) before Tuesday’s road game against the DC-Small leaders, Alma Center Lincoln. The Indees will be off the rest of the week before playing the rescheduled Gilmanton game.

Independence 49 Greenwood 40

The Indees had their best offensive showing of the season as they put up 49 points while showing roughly 49 percent from the field.

Independence started strong as they put up 27 points in the first half — which was as many or more than they’ve scored in two full games this season. The Indians stuck right with the Indees, however, as they scored 25.

The tide began to turn early in the second half when Ahnna Bautch knocked down a three pointer that put the Indees ahead by six points. Rhianna Theisen later knocked down a three of her own that made the score 41-33 with about eight minutes left.

The Indees led by as many as 11 points and maintained control of the game throughout the stretch.

Independence held Greenwood to 25.5 percent shooting from the field, but the game was close because the Indians were able to get numerous second opportunities with 17 offensive rebounds. As a result, Greenwood had 10 more field goal attempts and 12 more free-throw opportunities — though they only made 11 of their 28 attempts from the charity stripe. Greenwood’s Tysen Lindner had 15 rebounds in the game.

The Indees had a balanced scoring attack as Amiah Ives led the way with 10 points while Bautch, Theisen and Adison Pronschinske all scored nine, Arabelle Kniseley, Kassidy Dejno and Makiyah Scow all had four points. Scow led the team with eight rebounds.

Independence (field goals/attempts-free throws/attempts-rebounds-fouls-points) — Kniseley 1/1-2/2-3-4-4 Pronschinske 3/4-2/4-5-0-9 Ives 4/10-2/7-4-4-10 Bautch 4/10-0/0-7-3-9 Theisen 4/9-0/0-3-2-9 Dejno 2/4-0/0-1-0-4 Scow 2/3-0/2-8-3-4
