Indee girls team pulls away from Bulldogs

There didn’t look to be much of a difference on the scoreboard, but the Independence girls basketball team’s defense wouldn’t let Boyceville threaten late in the game.

The Indees had a five-point lead at halftime, but it might as well have been twice as large considering the teams had combined for just 25 points in the first half. The scoring picked up in the second half, but the Indees maintained control, winning 38-29.

The win put Independence at 2-1 on the season before their first Dairyland Conference game of the season played this Tuesday at home against Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran. Independence will be back in action next week when they head to Cashton on Tuesday for the first of eight straight road games.

Points were at a premium so when the Indees opened up a nine-point advantage early in the second half, the advantage was too much to overcome.

Independence led 15-10 at halftime and scored first in the second half. Boyceville kept pace with a basket of their own before Amiah Ives and Rhianna Theisen scored to put the Indees ahead 21-12.

Boyceville got back within six with two straight baskets, but they weren’t able to get much closer. Ives responded with another basket and then scored again to make the score 27-19. A free throw by Aubrie Pronschinske made it a nine-point game again.

Boyceville got within four at 31-27 late in the game, but Ives responded with two free throws before Ahnna Bautch scored to put the Indees back ahead by seven.

Avery Pape later added a free throw before Ives had a three-point play in the closing minutes to clinch the win.

The Indees might have had an easier time in the game had they converted more free throws. While they shot 11 percentage points (39 to 28) better than the Bulldogs from the field, Independence was just six-for-20 from the free-throw line. Boyceville also had six more rebounds, which helped them get eight more field goal attempts.

The Indees scored the first seven points of the game as Aubrie Pronschinske knocked in a three pointer to make the score 7-0. Both teams struggled to score after that.

Ives led Independence with 16 points while Aubrie Pronschinske scored nine with 10 rebounds. Pape scored five, Adison Pronschinske, four; Bautch and Theisen both scored two.
