Indee, Norse golfers advance to sectional

While the season ended for their teams, both Independence and Whitehall will send one golfer to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Mineral Point sectional.

Gabe Rombalski of Independence and Keanu Estenson of Whitehall were among the top four individuals in the Division Three Onalaska Luther regional, held at Drugan’s Castle Mound last week Tuesday. The top four individuals who were not on the four sectional-qualifying teams advanced.

Rombalski shot a 94 to finish 10th overall and second amongst individual qualifiers. Estenson came in with a 102, 18th overall and third among individual qualifiers.

A senior, Rombalski, was one of two Independence golfers competing in the regional. He shot a 46 on the front nine and a 48 on the back. The only other Independence competitor was John Roskos, another senior, who shot a 58 and a 60 for a total of 118.

Whitehall finished fifth in the team standings, 60 strokes behind fourth-place Luther.

Estenson, a freshman, shot a pair of 51s for his score of 102. Matthew Poulos came in with a 109 followed by Drake Jurowski, 117; Kaiden Gaier, 124 and Mike Payne, 128. Gaier and Poulos are both sophomores, the rest of Whitehall’s team were freshmen.

La Crosse Aquinas won the regional with a score of 358 followed by Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 376; Cochrane-Fountain City, 381; Luther, 392; Whitehall, 452 and Port Edwards, 459.

The New Glarus sectional teed off on Wednesday of this week. The top two teams and three individuals who are not members of those teams will advance to the state meet.
