Indee season ends with triple overtime loss

They extended the game into three overtimes, but the Independence girls basketball team didn’t have enough to pull off the upset in the opening round of Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play.

After a slow start in the first half, the Indees broke out in the second half to force overtime. The teams were still tied at the end of two overtime periods and late in the third before Plum City/Elmwood — the eighth seed in the WIAA bracket to Independence’s ninth seed — scored the last four points of the game for the win.

The Indees finished the season with a 10-13 overall record and they went 5-9 in Dairyland Conference play.

PC/E 63 Independence 59 - A free throw by Amiah Ives tied the game at 59, but three straight turnovers helped PC/E get the win.

After Ives made the free throw to tie the game, the Indees had a shot to take the lead, but a turnover led to a foul and PC/E’s Maggie Glaus made one of two free throws to put her team ahead. The Indees turned the ball over again on their next possession, but PC/E was unable to capitalize.

Independence had one last shot, but another turnover led to another foul. After Kate Faulk made the first free throw, she missed the second and Anna Blandford put the ball back in the basket to clinch the win.

The Indees struggled offensively at the start of the game as they trailed 13-3 early on and 24-11 at halftime.

After the teams exchanged baskets early in the second half, the Indees began chipping away. Two straight baskets by Ziy Conner got them within seven before PC/E pushed the lead back up to 11.

Independence kept coming, though. Emerson Pronschinske and Aubrie Pronschinske scored consecutive baskets to make the score 35-32 before Conner scored on two straight possessions later in the game, making the score 39-38.

PC/E led by four late, but Emerson Pronschinske made two free throws then nailed a three pointer just before the buzzer sounded to send the game to overtime.

The Indees had a 51-50 lead after Conner scored in the first overtime, but a free throw tied the game. Independence had a shot to win the game, but a missed shot followed by a turnover sent the game to overtime.

Conner scored late in the second overtime to tie the game at 57, but the Indees wouldn’t get another shot off as they turned it over on their last possession. PC/E missed two shots as the game went to a third overtime period.

The Indees shot 36 percent to PC/E’s 31 percent, but they committed 34 turnovers in the loss, 13 more than their opponent.
