Indee softball team drops two

Struggles at the plate and in the field led to two 11-0 losses for the Independence/Gilmanton softball team last week.

The Indees were competitive early against Arcadia last week Monday, but the Raiders pulled away as the game went along (see story elsewhere in Sports). Friday’s loss was a matter of two tough innings as all of Melrose-Mindoro’s runs came in the second and third frames.

The losses put I/G’s record at 3-2 on the season prior to Tuesday’s game at Pepin/Alma. They’ll host Whitehall on Friday before playing at Blair-Taylor this coming Tuesday.

Mel-Min 11 I/G 0

After the Indees failed to capitalize with a couple of runners on in the top of the second, the Mustangs took control of the game in the bottom half of the inning.

The Indees had two on with two outs in the top of the second before a strikeout ended the threat. Similarly, the Mustangs had two on with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, but managed to score four runs.

An error and a single put two runners on for Mel-Min before a strikeout by Nora Schank had the Indees one out away from escaping without any damage. However, the Mustangs connected on three straight singles to bring home four runs. The team kept hitting in the third with two doubles and four singles — in addition to two I/G errors — to plate seven runs.

The Indees got runners on in the fourth and fifth innings, but couldn’t bring them home.

Schank took the loss, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits in three innings, while striking out two. Leah Sylla finished the game, striking out one in one inning. Neither pitcher allowed a walk.

I/G had two hits in the game.
