Indee softball team drops two to DC foes

The Independence/Gilmanton softball team showed flashes, but it wasn’t enough as the team lost two Dairyland Conference games last week.

The Indees scored two runs early against Eleva-Strum last week Tuesday, but their bats were quiet the rest of the game in a 6-2 loss. On Friday, I/G had a five-run inning but were scoreless in the other six plate appearances in a 7-5 loss to Osseo-Fairchild.

I/G (0-3) looked for its first win at home against Whitehall on Monday and will host Melrose-Mindoro on Thursday. The team will then be off until this coming Tuesday when it plays at Alma Center Lincoln.

Eleva-Strum 6 I/G 2

The Indees scored two runs early but struggled at the plate for the rest of the game.

Hadley Sylla led off the bottom of the first with a triple for I/G and scored on a groundout hit by Danika Ekern, tying the game. Ekern later scored on a passed ball to give the Indees a 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals scored two runs on a hit, a walk and a hit batter in the top of the second and didn’t look back as the Indees managed just one hit the rest of the game.

E-S added a run in the fourth inning and two in the seventh.

Harper Symicek had I/G’s only other hit in the game.

Hannah Ekern took the loss, striking out seven while allowing seven walks and five hits. Four of the runs allowed were unearned.

Osseo-Fairchild 7 I/G 5

The Indees answered a six-run inning, but it wasn’t quite enough in the loss.

The Thunder struck for six runs in the bottom of the third, as the team managed three hits, three walks, and a hit batter to take a 6-0 advantage.

The Indees responded with five runs in the next frame. The first run scored on an error and the next on a hit batter with the bases loaded. Hadley Sylla then bashed a 2-1 pitch into left field for a three-run double. That made it a one-run game, but the Indees couldn’t get over the hump.

The Thunder scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth and the Indees managed just one baserunner in each of the next two innings.

Hannah Ekern had two of I/G’s five hits in the game, while Sylla batted in three runs.

Ekern took the loss in the circle, striking out eight while allowing five hits and seven walks. Four of O-F’s runs were unearned as the Indees committed four errors in the game.
