Indee softball team wins two to end regular season

The Independence/Gilmanton softball team got hits late as they ended the regular season with a pair of one-run wins.

The Indees opened the week with an 8-7 win over Whitehall on Monday before edging Eleva-Strum, 4-3, on Tuesday. They finished the regular season with a 6-13 record.

Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament play began for the Indees on Tuesday of this week as they’re the sixth seed in their Division Five bracket and played at (3) Pepin/Alma. The winner of that game plays the winner of the game between (7) Alma Center Lincoln) and (2) Columbus Catholic on Thursday.  

I/G 8 Whitehall 7

An error in the bottom of the ninth allowed the winning run to come home.

Kassidi Dejno reached base with a one-out single in the ninth then moved to second on a groundout. Kylynn Kennedy then hit to second, but Whitehall’s Zoey George had trouble completing the play, allowing Dejno to score the winning run.

Three walks, a hit batter and a two-run single by Kennedy helped the Indees take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Whitehall got one run back in the third when Kelsie Klomsten scored on an error. But the Indees remained in control with two runs – including an RBI single by Adison Pronschinske — in the fourth.

A two-run single by Harlow Foss in the fifth kept the Norse within striking distance. A four-run sixth helped the team erase a five-run deficit and take the lead. The first run scored on a single by Carson Coburn before Addison Herman brought the team within one by singling with one out. The Norse took the lead when two runs scored on an outfield error.

The Indees were down to their final out before Makiyah Scow singled to score Maggie Woychik, tying the game.

Both teams threatened in extra innings, but I/G scored to win it in the ninth.

The Indees had five hits in the game, led by Dejno, who had two. Foss had two hits and three RBIs to lead Whitehall, which had seven hits. 

Leah Sylla was the winning pitcher, striking out four with three walks. Ashlyn Clatt took the loss, striking out seven with five hits and seven walks.

The teams combined for 11 errors in the game as only seven of the 15 runs scored were earned. 

I/G 4 Eleva-Strum 3

The Indees scored two in the top of the sixth to take the lead and they held on for the win.

An RBI single by Pronschinske tied the game with in the sixth, then Pronschinske scored on a passed ball to give the Indees the lead. 

Two errors in the bottom of the sixth had the Cardinals threatening, but Sylla got out of a jam. She then retired the Cardinals in order in the bottom half of the inning. She struck out two while allowing four walks and five hits in the win. 

A two-run single by Dejno put the Indees ahead in the top of the first. E-S tied the game with one run in the fourth then took a 3-2 lead with one in the fifth.

Pronschinske and Emma Cowen both had two hits for the Indees.
