Indees beat GC after two DC losses

The Independence girls basketball team had a hard time finding the bottom of the net in two Dairyland Conference losses at home last week, but their offense exploded in a nonconference win on Saturday.

The Indees were competitive against one of the best teams in the Dairyland Conference – Cochrane-Fountain City – last week Tuesday, but the Pirates went on a run early in the second half and won 42-33. The Indees were also close with Melrose-Mindoro on Friday, but couldn’t get enough offense to win the game, falling 46-33. On Saturday, however, they scored a season-high 62 points in a lopsided road win over Glenwood City. 

The Indees opened this week with a 6-10 record (3-3 in DC play, behind only Alma Center Lincoln in the DC-Small Division). They played at Plum City/Elmwood on Tuesday and will head to Augusta on Thursday. This coming Tuesday the Indees host Blair-Taylor.

The Indees stuck with one of the better teams in the conference for a half, but the Pirates took control of the game early in the second half.

C-FC hit two straight three pointers to begin the second half then another that put them ahead 32-23. The teams went back and forth for most of the rest of the game, but the Pirates were able to stay ahead by two possessions.

Outside of the stretch at the start of the second half, the teams were mostly even. The Pirates jumped out to a15-10 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Indees went on a 9-0 run to take the lead with about five minutes left in the first half. C-FC closed with a 8-2 run to take a 23-21 advantage into halftime.

The Indees held the Pirates to 35 percent shooting, while shooting 33 percent themselves. 

Amiah Ives and Ahnna Bautch both scored nine points to lead the Indees while Callie Zastrow had eight.

The Indees had a tough time getting shots to fall as the Mustangs controlled the game.

The teams were close in the first half, though Mel-Min took a seven-point lead into halftime. Independence’s offense dropped off more in the second half as they scored just 14 points.

The Indees shot about 29 percent from the field, led by Amiah Ives who had 14 points. In addition to their struggles from the field, Independence made four of 19 free throws.

The Indees scored more points in the first half alone than they did in either of their other games this week.

Defense led to offense for the Indees as they had 21 steals in the game, which helped them open a 36-8 lead at halftime. They let up a bit in the second half, but still maintained control of the game. 

Independence had a balanced attack, led by Adison Pronschinske’s 14 points. Ives added 10 while both Zastrow and Theisen scored nine. Independence shot 35 percent from the field and made 14-of-27 free throws.
