Indees can’t overcome slow start in loss to Bulldogs

While it controlled the middle portion of the game, the Independence/Gilmanton girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start and poor finish in a 42-35 loss to Boyceville last week Tuesday.

The Indees trailed by eight at halftime, but began the second half with a run to take the lead. However, the Indees only scored three points in the final 10 minutes of the 41-35 loss.

The loss put I/G at 1-2 on the season before playing Alma/Pepin at home in Gilmanton on Tuesday of this week. On Thursday, they’ll head to Cochrane-Fountain City. This coming Monday, I/G hosts New Auburn in Independence and they’ll welcome Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran next Thursday.

Boyceville 41 I/G 35

A 12-2 run to begin the second half wasn’t enough as the Indees went cold down the stretch.

Boyceville took an eight-point lead into halftime, but the Indees cut into that early in the second. Arabelle Kniseley scored five straight points — taking a steal back for a layup and knocking in a three pointer to cut the lead to two at 30-28. Makiyah Scow tied the game with a layup off of a steal.

The Indees took the lead about six minutes into the second half when Shauna Dejno got inside for a layup to put the team ahead 32-30.

But the Indees would score just three more points the rest of the game. I/G had chances to add to the lead, but missed four straight free throws. The Bulldogs scored five straight to take a 35-32 lead.

The Indees had one last spark as Kniseley knocked in a three pointer to tie the game with three and a half minutes remaining, but those would be I/G’s last points. After an empty possession with the score tied at 35, Boyceville was able to take time off the clock and scored six straight points to end the game.

I/G struggled form the field in the game, making just 22 percent from the field. They also made half of their 14 free throws.

Kniseley led I/G with 13 points, Adison Pronschinske was next on the team with six.
