Indees drop two nonconference games

The Independence/Gilmanton boys basketball team let a win slip away and fell in a lop-sided game last week.

The Indees had the lead for much of the second half of their game in Cashton last Tues-day, but the Eagles went on a late run and came away with a 65-58 victory. The team was close early against Boyceville on Friday, but the Bulldogs went on a couple of big runs in the first half to take control in a 71-36 win.

The losses dropped I/G to 0-8 on the season. The team played at Plum City/Elmwood on Tuesday and will host Augusta in Gilmanton on Thursday. Next Tuesday the Indees welcome Blair-Taylor in Independence before hosting Osseo-Fairchild in Gilmanton on Friday.

Cashton 65 I/G 58

The Indees looked to be in position to pick up their first win of the season, but Cashton went on a run about midway through the second half to take control.

The Indees were ahead for much of the game. The team had a 30-28 lead at halftime and scored eight straight points in the second half to take a 47-41 lead with about eight minutes remaining in the game.

The Eagles caught fire after that. The team made four straight shots, including a three-pointer that put them ahead 50-47 with six minutes left in the game.

The Indees continued to battle as a Tyler Parr layup brought the team back within three with five minutes left. Cashton responded by scoring the next seven points to take a 10-point advantage with three minutes remaining.

I/G was able to pull within seven a few times in the closing minutes, but Cashton always had a response.

Parr scored a season-high 17 points to lead the Indees while Luis Ignacio added 16 and Nolan Schank finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

A three-pointer gave the Indees a spark, but Boyceville took control of the game shortly after.

The Bulldogs scored the first eight points in the game, but the Indees came back and a three-pointer by Nery Lopez that made the score 12-7. However, Boyceville scored the next nine points to go ahead by double digits.

Boyceville continued to control the rest of the first half, taking a 40-18 lead into halftime. The second half was more of the same as the Bulldogs held the Indees to just 18 points again and won by 35 points.
