Indees earn split in DC play
The Independence/Gilmanton girls basketball team got off to a couple of fast starts, but could only finish one of their games with a win last week.
The Indees started strong and took a nine-point lead into halftime of their 55-42 win over Alma/Pepin in Gilmanton on Tuesday. They had a halftime lead on the road against Cochrane-Fountain City on Thursday, but managed just 10 points in the second half as one of the Dairyland Conference’s top teams took ctonrol.
I/G (2-3, 1-1) hosted New Auburn on Monday of this week and will welcome Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Thursday – with both games being played in Independence. They’ll head to Alma Center Lincoln this coming Tuesday and play in Arcadia next Thursday.

The Indees went on a 12-4 run to take control then held off the Eagles in the second half.
The teams were close early before the Indees scored 12 of 16 to take a 25-15 lead and they took a 33-24 advantage into halftime.
The Eagles kept coming in the second half, but the Indees turned back each challenge. A/P scored six of the first eight points to pull within five early in the second, but I/G responded with a 7-2 run. A/P scored five consecutive points to get within six, then I/G scored six straight to take a 49-37 lead.
The Eagles were within nine late, but I/G scored six of the last eight points to secure a 13-point win.
Freshman Norah Schank was one of four Indees in double-figures, leading the team with 16 points. Makiyah Scow scored 12, Adison Pronschinske finished with 11 and Kassidi Dejno scored 10. Arabelle Kniseley scored the team’s other six points.

The Indees stuck with a team many believe will win the Dairyland Conference title this year for a half, but went cold late.
I/G had a one-point lead at halftime of the game, but C-FC scored the first seven points of the second half. The Indees came back with a basket by Schank and free throw by Scow, but points would be hard to come by for I/G in the second frame.
C-FC scored 16 of the next 18 points to take control of the game. The Indees got one more basket and another free-throw after that, but that’s all they’d manage.
Schank led I/G with 10 points, while Scow scored six, while pulling in 12 rebounds. The team shot 23 percent from the field and made 10-of-19 free throws. Isabella Holzer led C-FC with 15 points.
