Pitching and defense led the way as the Independence/Gilmanton didn’t allow scores in 13 of 14 innings in two wins last week.

The Indees threw a shutout to beat Cochrane-Fountain City, 6-0, last Thursday. On Friday, Augusta scored two in the first, but that’s all they’d get as I/G won, 9-2.

I/G took its 3-0 record into a nonconference game at home against Arcadia on Monday before hosting Alma Center Lincoln on Tuesday. They’re set to play at Melrose-Mindoro on Friday and Pepin/Alma this coming Tuesday.

I/G 6 C-FC 0

Six runs in the third inning were all the Indees needed as their pitching and defense shut out the Pirates.

Freshman Nora Schank pitched a complete game, holding C-FC to six hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Leah Sylla got I/G’s offense off to a good start in the bottom of the third with a double. She later scored on a single by Avery Halama. Adison Pronschinske and Emma Cowen connected on consecutive RBI singles – the latter bringing in two runs to give I/G a 4-0 lead. Pronschinske later scored on an error and Cowen on a fielder’s choice to make the score 6-0.

Schank worked out of a couple of jams, including in the fifth inning when the first two batters singled. Schank struck the next two out then got a groundout to escape the inning without any damage. The Pirates had two on with one out in the seventh, but Schank retired the next two batters to preserve the shutout.

Pronschinske had two of I/G’s five hits in the game and Cowen batted in two runs.

I/G 9 Augusta 2

After spotting the Beavers two runs, the Indees were in complete control.

Augusta took the lead on a two-run single in the top of the first inning, but that would be their only hit in the game.

Pronschinske singled to score Kniseley and put the Indees on the board in the bottom of the first. The team took the lead when two runs scored on an error in the second.

After another run on another error in the third, Pronschinske hit another RBI single in the fourth. Kassidi Dejno then hit a single to score Pronschinske and put her team ahead 6-2.

The Indees had three straight hits, including an RBI single by Danika Ekern in the sixth. Kylynn Kennedy then singled another run home.

I/G had eight hits in the game as Pronschinske, Cowen and Dejno all had two. Kennedy and Pronschinske both had two RBIs.

Leah Sylla was the winning pitcher, as she threw into the fifth inning with six strikeouts while allowing one hit and five walks. Schank came on with one out in the fifth and closed the game, not allowing a hit or walk while striking out five.
