Indees shut down Lancers in overtime
The Independence/Gilmanton girls basketball team made clutch free throws and key defensive stops in a 54-51 overtime road win over Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran last Tuesday.
The Indees took the 52-51 lead on two free throws by Arabelle Kniseley with 1:54 remaining. The Lancers had a chance to take the lead again, but Natalie Gurgel missed a jump shot.
I/G missed a chance to extend its lead with a turnover and ECI had multiple chances to go ahead, but the Indees stepped up defensively. The Lancers rebounded a missed three pointer and kept possession after an I/G deflection. Looking for a good shot, ECI moved the ball around but the Indees deflected a pass in the post and Nora Schank came away with the steal.
Schank pushed the ball up the floor before the Lancers were forced to foul. Schank made two free throws with 12.7 seconds left in the game.
ECI called a timeout and pushed the ball up the floor, but Sophia Carstensen’s three pointer went off the front of the rim. The Lancers got an offensive rebound, but missed a jump shot from inside the three-point line and I/G claimed the rebound.
The Indees got off to a slow start, trailing 28-23 at halftime. The team came out of halftime strong and had a lead late in the second half, but didn’t score in the final four minutes of regulation. The Lancers tied the game at 48 with 1:02 remaining, but neither team scored again until overtime.
I/G’s defense held ECI to just 30 percent shooting from the floor as Gabi Radichel had a team-high 15 points.
Kniseley scored 17 to lead the Indees, which made 37 percent of its shots. Schank added 14 and freshman Rielynn Sheahan scored 10.
I/G (2-0, 2-0) hosted Cashton in Independence on Monday of this week and will head to Melrose-Mindoro on Thursday.
