Indees snap losing streak, begin winning streak

After a late free throw extended the Independence/Gilmanton boys basketball team’s losing streak, the team won two straight against Dairyland Conference teams last week.

But I/G’s losing streak stopped at six as the team went on a run early in its game against Melrose-Mindoro and went on for a 59-48 win last week Tuesday. On Friday, I/G got off to a strong start and finished even better for a 59-39 win over Augusta in Gilmanton.

A free throw with about four seconds left followed by a miss at the buzzer extended I/G’s losing streak to six.

The Indees had a 20-18 lead at halftime of a game that was close throughout. The Indees seemed to have a chance to win in regulation, but a missed free throw with 48 seconds left opened the door for the Trojans. Chris Elmhorst capitalized making his only field goal of the game, a corner three pointer to tie the game at 42 with 42 seconds remaining.

Neither team scored again in regulation. The Indees took an early lead in overtime, but the Trojans matched every basket. New Auburn took a two-point advantage, but a jump shot by I/G’s Nolan Schank tied the game with 21 seconds left.

New Auburn ran time off the clock before getting the ball to Colten Lotts who drove to the basket and drew a foul with 3.9 seconds remaining. Lotts missed the first free throw, but made the second. Lotts finished with a game-high 23 points, though he missed three of six free throws.

After a time out, the Indees pushed the ball up the floor, but Tyler Parr’s running three-pointer bounced off the backboard and off the rim at the buzzer.

A 10-2 run midway through the second half gave the Indees some breathing room as the team held on for a win.

I/G began the game with an 11-2 run, but Augusta came back and took the lead at one point in the first half. The teams were tied at 27 in the second before I/G made a big move.
