Indees split with BRF, ECI

The Independence girls basketball team played tough defense last week, but it was only good enough to earn a split in its two games.

The Indees held Black River Falls to 38 points as they held on late for an eight-point win. Their defense was strong early against Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Thursday, but Independence managed just 36 points in the loss.

Independence enters this week with an 8-13 overall record (3-4 in Dairyland Conference play) before playing at New Auburn on Tuesday. They’ll host Alma/Pepin on Friday before heading to Augusta in the last regular season game that is on their schedule this coming Monday.

Lockdown defense and career scoring nights for two Indees helped the team to a nonconference win.

The Indees held the Tigers to just nine points in the first half as they took an 18-9 lead into halftime. The lead grew to double digits early in the second half and the Indees went ahead by 18 with about 14 minutes left in the game.

The Tigers made the game interesting down the stretch, cutting the lead to six with three minutes remaining, but the Indees held on for the win.

Independence seniors Ahnna Bautch and Rhianna Theisen both reached new career highs in scoring as Bautch led the team with 19 points and Theisen scored 14. Both also contributed defensively as Theisen had seven steals and Bautch finished with five.

Defense kept the Indees in the game early, but their offensive struggles were too much to overcome.

The Indees only scored 16 points in the first half, but trailed by just nine. Their offense was a little better in the second half, but still not enough to get back in the game as the Lancers pulled away.

Independence shot 24 percent from the field and 10-for-21 from the free-throw line. Bautch led the team with 12 points, two more than Adison Pronschinske.
