Indees split five set matches

The Independence volleyball team won one five set match and lost another last week.
The Indees won the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead over Whitehall last week Tuesday, but lost the next two to drop the match (see story elsewhere in Sports). On Thursday, they went back and forth against Melrose-Mindoro before getting the upper hand in the fifth set for the 3-2 win.
With two weeks left in the season, the Indees sit at 5-10 overall and 2-5 in Dairyland Conference action. They played at Eleva-Strum on Tuesday and will host Alma Center Lincoln on Thursday. This coming Tuesday, they head to Pepin/Alma before their final regular season match at home against Cochrane-Fountain City next week Thursday.

The Indees needed a close win to fight off a 2-0 hole, then controlled the fifth set to win the match.
The Mustangs won a close first set and the second was just as tight as the Indees came away with a 26-24 win. It appeared Independence might take control after a 25-14 win in the next set, but the Mustangs tied the match with a 25-20 win. The Indees held on, winning the fifth set by six points.
Amiah Ives led Independence at the net with 15 kills and one block, while Maggie Woychik added 11 kills and a block, Kassidy Dejno had eight kills and Rhianna Theisen had six, both also had blocks.
Ives also stood out at the service line where she had eight aces, Adison Pronschinske had three and Dejno, Makiyah Scow and Theisen all had two. Theisen led the team with 26 digs, Pronschinske had 13 digs and a team-high 36 assists.
