Indees swept by Pirates, edge Beavers

The Independence/Gilmanton volleyball team rebounded from a three-set loss with a five-set win last week.

The Indees struggled against Cochrane-Fountain City on Tuesday, losing each set by at least seven points. On Thursday, the team bounced back with a 3-2 win over Augusta.

I/G began this week with a 6-14 overall record, including a 1-4 mark in Dairyland Conference play. The team will play at Alma Center Lincoln on Thursday and to Blair-Taylor next Tuesday.

The Indees had a difficult time getting started as C-FC controlled the match.

Hailey Gruber had a team-high five kills while Hadley Sylla and Laurynn Olson both had three. Celia Slaby, Shauna Dejno, and Hannah Ekern all had two. Ekern led the team with nine set assists. Harper Symicek had a team-high 13 digs.

The Indees had four service aces in the match, with Sylla, Symicek, Yuritza Bautista Santiago, and Joelle Schue all getting one.

The Indees overcame a lopsided loss in the second set to win the match.

Both Hannah Ekern and Sylla had 10 kills to tie for the team lead. Shauna Dejno added eight kills and three blocks. Both Slaby and Gruber had four kills and Olson finished with two. Ekern had 17 assists, while Symicek added 12. 

Bautista-Santiago was on fire from the service line, registering six aces. Danika Ekern added three, Sylla had two and Hannah Ekern, Symicek, and Schue all had one. 

Danika Ekern had a team-high 24 digs, Hannah Ekern added 14, and Symicek finished with 13.
