Indees top Hornets in DC play
The Independence/Gilmanton girls basketball team took control early in the second half then held off Alma Center Lincoln down the stretch.
The Indees got off to a fast start, scoring the first six points, before the Hornets went on an 11-2 run. The teams went back and forth for a bit, but the Indees closed the first half strong to take a 20-17 lead into halftime.
I/G scored the first eight points of the second half to establish control. The first three points came on free throws before Nora Schank got a steal and layup to put the team ahead 25-17. The lead increased to 11 when Arabelle Kniseley knocked down a three pointer off of an inbound play with 15:30 left in the game.
The Hornets kept swarming and pulled back within four with about nine minutes remaining before Schank got inside for a layup. ACL had chances to get even closer, but a missed free throw and missed shot were followed by a free throw by Makiyah Scow that made the score 37-32.
Two free throws got the Hornets within three and had chances to make the game even closer, but came up empty before Adison Pronschinske made two free throws for I/G with 5:40 left in the game. Kassidi Dejno made a free-throw to make it a six-point game with five minutes left then Schank made two from the line to make the score 42-34 with four minutes remaining.
Both teams shot about the same percentage from the field, but I/G was better from the free-throw line, making 16-of-34 shots (47 percent) compared to ACL’s seven-for-20 (35 percent). Kniseley led I/G with 15 points, Scow added 13.
After the win last week Tuesday, the Indees lost a nonconference game to Arcadia (see story elsewhere in Sports). I/G was 5-4 (3-1 in DC play) before playing at Blair-Taylor on Thursday of this week. The Indees are set to host Cornell next Thursday and play in Cashton next Friday.
