Indees top Norse, fall to Pirates

The Independence/Gilmanton volleyball team came through in the clutch to win three close sets against Whitehall last week.

The match went all five sets as I/G won the first and third sets by two points then took the third by three to escape with the road win. The team fell to Cochrane-Fountain City on Thursday. 

The Indees began this week with an overall record of 3-11 and a 2-3 mark in Dairyland Conference play. The team hosted Augusta in Gilmanton on Tuesday and will return to Independence to play Alma Center Lincoln this coming Tuesday.

While Whitehall scored more total points than the Indees in the five sets, the road team came through in the clutch to win the match 3-2. 

Makiyah Scow had a team-best 12 kills for I/G while adding six service aces. The team got eight kills and five aces from Nora Schank, who also had a team-high 26 digs. 

In all, the Indees had 22 aces as Hannah Ekern had a team-high eight while Danika Ekern added two and Arabelle Kniseley had one. Hannah Ekern also had a team-best 21 set assists. 

Aryana Ausderau had 12 kills to lead the Norse, while Kyla Lambeck had 28 assists. Harlow Foss had eight aces and 25 digs.

The Indees couldn’t climb out of an 0-2 hole, falling in its first match in Independence this season.

Scow had a team-high seven kills while both Hannah Ekern and Hadley Sylla had five. Ekern and Schank also had four aces and Ekern was the team’s top setter with 17 assists. 

I/G was active defensively, Kniseley had 30 digs, two more than Schank while Ekern had 23 and Danika Ekern finished with 22.
