Late steals help Raiders sink Pirates

Two defensive plays by Cam Boland gave the Arcadia boys basketball team a 47-45 win over Cochrane-Fountain City last week Monday.

Arcadia coach Ryan Sonnentag said C-FC had the ball with a chance to win the game before Boland got a steal and took it back for a layup to give the Raiders a 47-45 lead with 24 seconds left.

The Pirates were going for a tie or the win on their next possession, but Boland forced a turnover, clinching the win for the Raiders.

The Raiders held a 32-26 lead at halftime before both teams struggled offensively. The Pirates eventually caught up, but defense led to offense and a win for the Raiders. The game-winning layup was Boland’s only field goal of the game.

Arcadia shot slightly better from the field going 17-for-43 (39.5 percent) to C-FC’s 16-for-43. Arcadia made eight three pointers to C-FC’s three, but the Pirates had five more made free throws.

Kaden Updike led Arcadia with 14 points while Trev Bjorge scored 12 and Kevin Cruz had 10.

Arcadia (2-11, 1-5) hosted Osseo-Fairchild on Monday. They will go to Viroqua on Thursday, followed by a trip to Sparta on Friday. This coming Tuesday, the Raiders are set to host Eau Claire Regis before welcoming Black River Falls next week Friday.
